Managing Baby’s Routine When You Need to Go Out
We all know how important a routine is for our baby, but life doesn’t stop, and sometimes we need to head out during their usual nap or feed times.
Here are some tips to help keep things on track while being flexible:
Plan Around the Routine (When Possible)
If your baby has a set nap time, try to leave after they’ve napped or aim to be back before their next sleep.
If you can, schedule outings in between wake windows to avoid overtiredness.
Take Essentials With You
If a feed is due while you're out, bring milk (bottles, formula, or expressed milk) or be prepared to breastfeed.
For solids, pack snacks or a small meal if they’re on solids already.
Nap On the Go
If your baby can nap in the car, stroller, or carrier, use that to your advantage! Bring comfort items like a blanket, white noise, or a dummy if they use one.
A contact nap in the carrier can be a lifesaver if they struggle to sleep elsewhere.
Be Flexible
If naps or feeds are slightly off schedule, don’t stress. Try to get back to the routine as soon as you can, and remember that one or two off days won’t ruin their overall sleep habits.
Reset When You Get Home
If naps were shorter or skipped, an earlier bedtime might help.
Offer an extra feed if they missed one or didn’t eat well while out.
Know Your Baby
Some babies adapt easily, while others struggle with changes. If your little one is sensitive to routine disruptions, keep outings short or at a time when they’re least likely to be fussy.
